Abstract
Located by the banks of the Tamsui River, Dadaocheng gradually became a commercial hub of Taipei in the 1860s because of its convenient river transportation. Frequent trading activities gave rise to drinking parlors—integrating commerce, entertainment, and dining—a public gathering place for all sectors of the industries. However, with the passage of time and economic transformations, drinking parlors with profound history and genius loci gradually disappeared in Dadaocheng. This design thesis was based on street-house spaces in the front section of Dihua Street. From the perspective of blending and reshaping old and new resto‐bar cultures, this thesis analyzed the drinking parlor culture in Dadaocheng and introduced an emerging experience brought about by Taihu Brewing. Through brand analysis and site research, a plan that intended to create a dialogue between old (historical space) and new (new craft beer brand) was developed. Before the design, a literature review was performed to understand the characteristics and development of resto‐bars and craft beer. After the brand analysis, the development strategy of revitalizing an old building into a resto‐bar was derived. Finally, design simulations based on design concept, strategy formulation, and experiential marketing produced the following results: 1) to extend the historical value of the old buildings, a resto‐bar where the old and the new coexist was created; 2) brand introduction instilled new energy into Dihua Street and Taihu Brewing; and 3) site context and street-house characteristics were used to create a sequence of diverse spatial experience. Future research is advised to break through the existing site conditions, expand the scope of design to experiential activities in the neighborhood, and include the design of elevator passages to meet the needs of barrier-free circulation. Brand introduction could deepen the study of transformation and image recognition.
