Abstract
An encyclopedia entry for the Convincing Ground Massacre in Portland, Victoria, is presented. It refers to the massacre, by white whalers, of almost the entire population of the Kilkarer gundidj. In 1833 or 1834, a harpooned whale broke from its moorings and beached itself on the shore. When the whalers went to retrieve it, the Kilkarer gundidj claimed the whale. In response, the whalers decided to convince them otherwise and a massacre ensued at a location which came to be known as the Convincing Ground. The clan saved two young men.
