Abstract
The response of small-bowel epithelial migration during a nonenteric infection was studied in the rat. Sixteen hours after a subcutaneous inoculation ofD. pneumoniae, a nonsustained increase in crypt mitotic activity occurred This was followed by a similar nonsustained increase in small-bowel epithelial-cell migration 8 hr. later. Neither the appearance of the epithelial cells nor the structure of the villi was altered during the infection.
