Abstract
The literature on physical and sexual abuse and its relationship to anorexia nervosa and bulimic nervosa is reviewed. Studies have often been methodologically flawed and results appear contradictory. At best, sexual and physical abuse may be considered risk factors in a multidimensional approach to the etiology of eating disorders. Implications for treatment and future research are discussed.
