BRIEF HISTORICAL SURVEY RECENTLY Rosen1 has become an active proponent of the mobilization of the stapes. Adequately informed and prepared otologists (and I, from my studies in otoneurology) know, however, that mobilization of the stapes occupies the largest place—next to fenestration—in the history of the surgery of deafness.Mobilization of the stapes began with Kessel, in 1876, who first advised it, and extended his attempts even to extraction of the stapes and to excision of the annular ligament, with success. Mobilization of the stapes with variations was practiced by Schwartze, Michel, Urbantschitsch, and Boucheron. In 1890 the technique was brought to a very high state of development by Camille Miot.2Rosen's description of his current procedure runs quite parallel to Miot's description of the technique of 1890.
