Abstract
•Two extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia colistrains were isolated from diseased horses in Japan.•An antimicrobial resistance (AMR) gene cluster containing blaCTX-M-1was located on the chromosome of the two strains.•The AMR gene cluster was similar to plasmid pEQ1 found in E. coliisolated from racehorses in the Czech Republic.•In one of the strains, tandem duplication of the 16-kb region containing blaCTX-M-1and a class 1 integron was observed.•Tandem duplication of the 16-kb region increased MICs associated with the duplicated AMR genes.
