Abstract
The author reveals that when he arrived in Italy in early 1991 to begin his biography of Primo Levi, he could not have imagined that it would take ten years to complete. Progress was hampered by the arrival of his three children. Levi had appointed an Italian critic as his official biographer, months before his suicide. He claims that writing and researching a biography with a rival at one's back can be a nightmare.
