Abstract
The article discusses the role of diaries and personal journals which are frequently used in conventional historical research. This genre of primary evidence has been particularly important to feminist scholars. Historians of women, often frustrated by the abundance of source material written about women but not by women, rely on diaries to hear women's own "voices," to gain access to women's own thoughts and feelings. Analyses of women's personal journals have revealed that in the midst of social or economic upheaval, the daily and seasonal rhythms of reproduction, childcare, and domestic work might well persist, or even be strengthened.
