Abstract
Planning for sustainable and accessible urban areas is a challenging task in small cities. Although guidelines are available, urban planners and policy makers seek simplified models to apply the SUMP concept effectively in the local context. This paper presents results and lessons learnt from innovative approaches for simplified mobility planning, tailored to the needs of small insular cities with seasonal tourism, tested in Platanias in the island of Crete. Results focus on the analysis of mobility and behaviour patterns of citizens and visitors, in combination with mobility and environmental indicators, to support decision-making following a systematic co-creation process for developing the city's first SUMP. This work aims to test simplified processes and analytical tools towards a prototype for replication in other Cretan municipalities or other insular tourism destinations.
