Abstract
The article discusses the use of fabrics to celebrate historical events or promoting political messages in Nigeria. The author focuses on difficulties faced by stakeholders for political fabrics, such as event sponsors, fabric producers and fabric users. He notes how Ladapo Ademola II, leader of the Egba ethnic group, ordered fabrics with Egba designs from Britain and Okunola Abasi Alesinloye, monarch of Ibadan, Nigeria, requested a damask designed for his coronation. Politician Adegoke Adelabu profiting by selling fabrics featuring his name for propaganda purposes. Losses to sportswear firm John Stars Ltd., due to the cancellation of a football competition for which clothing had been designed are noted. Risks to wearing politically-oriented fabrics are noted.
