Abstract
This paper presents a motivational example of meaningful use of simple tools from elementary probability. The model presented represents an optimal design for a receiver of signals under the assumption two messages are sent. The results characterize optimal receivers and present useful optimizing functions. In turn, these functions are used to explain and prove a version of the Neyman-Pearson theorem. Finally, informative examples are given.
