Abstract
The article discusses the 18th century history of Italy, with a focus on the unofficial payment of taxes in the Republic of Venice, and the use of corn and grain products as a form of payment of tithes. Topics discussed include background on structures of power and political order during the early part of the 18th century in the Republic of Venice, the practice beginning in the second half of the 18th century, by which it was possible to pay two thirds of the tithe in grains, and the insights into the financial and economic situation of the government in this period.
