Abstract
This article deals with a study on the formation of highly syndiotactic methyl methacrylate (MMA) during the stereospecific group transfer polymerization (GTP) of MMA with Lewis-acid catalysis. Purification of MMA was conducted through fractional distillation under reduced nitrogen pressure. Inclusion of a solution of initiator in CH2Cl2 to the mixture of monomer, aluminum phenoxide, cocatalysts and a CH2Cl2 under a dry nitrogen atmosphere was conducted to initiate a polymerization. The combination of EtA1(BHT)2 as the catalyst and Me3SiI as the co-catalyst gave the highest activity in the GTP of MMA with 1-methoxy-1-(trimethylsiloxy)-2-methyl-1-propene in CH2Cl2.
