Abstract
The article focuses on the progressive rock style, called the prog style, of piano music. Prog style has systematically explored other boundaries of music than any form of popular music. It draws creative inspiration from many musical sources besides rock such as jazz, classical, folk and avant-garde. Moreover, prog music favors long compositions over the usual three-minute-per-song and employs extended instrumental sections and improvisations, mood and tempo changes, and imaginative lyrics.
