Abstract
The relationship between maternal and caregiver assessments of temperament and measures of social initiative and solitary behavior was examined in a playgroup of twelve children between 14 and 23 months. Caregiver and maternal ratings of sociability failed to differentiate between those infants who were observed to be high or low in initiative. Instead caregiver ratings of sociability were most strongly related to the absence of social interaction, i.e., solitary behavior. Maternal ratings were more closely related to age and how the infant responded to others' initiations.
