Abstract
Acquired defects of the back primarily are the result of radiation injury, trauma, tumor ablation, or wound dehiscence and infection. Congenital defects occur primarily in the lower back and are associated with meningomyelocele. A high rate of success can be expected in the management of posterior trunk defects with muscle flaps, provided the surgeon adheres closely to the basic reconstructive principles and selects the proper flap.
