Abstract
In this paper the results of an industrial-based examination (client: Electrolux) is described. The task of the examination was to reduce manufacturing and assembling costs of some products (vacuum cleaners, refrigerators and freezers). In the beginning of this paper a few cost reduction philosophies (TPS, Lean) are shortly introduced. Based on the carried out work, the intervention options were classified into four groups. The paper gives examples for each group. The client required that the quality of the devices should not deteriorate as a result of the interventions. The client requested an “outsider” to explore cost-cutting opportunities. The client has provided us with detailed technical documentation of the equipment and one piece of each type of products (11 different) and we could also see the production of the products in the factory. The main purpose of the work is to show what kind of cost saving opportunities can find an “outsider” in common products.
