Abstract
The experiences and test performances of a group of mothers whose children were undergoing elective surgery were compared to those of a control group. The former group showed several signs of stress, including anxiety, dysphoria, sleep disturbances, intrusive cognitions, and impaired cognitive performance. All of these signs subsided within 24 hours of the children's recovery from surgery.
