Abstract
The article reports cases of jaguar poisoning on ranches in Southern Brazilian Amazonia, obtained during a systematic survey of livestock depredation by large cats from September 2007 to July 2008. One occasion showed a female jaguar and her young that were poisoned. The observers also recorded a lesser yellow-headed vulture Cathartes melambrotus and a domestic dog feeding on the contaminated livestock carcasses. Two other cases of poisoning included a puma Puma concolor that induced vomiting next to a live carcass, and an entire herd of white-lipped peccaries Tayassu pecari killed after eating corn with poison. The use of highly toxic commercial products to poison predators were reported by ranchers.
