Abstract
The Cincinnati General Hospital recently initiated a career ladder program in nursing service that benefits individual employees, as well as the department of nursing and the hospital as a whole. The program was designed to assist in solving some of the long-term problems in the hospital's nursing service, many of which exist in other institutions. While our program was developed to meet our own specific needs, we hope it will provide some useful suggestions to others who are seeking solutions to similar problems. First, I will describe the program, then discuss how it benefits both the employees and the institution. For purposes of clarity, let's follow a hypothetical employee, Ms. Jones, through the program.
