Abstract
AbstractThe genus Protostyelawas known by only one specimen of P. heterobranchiacollected in Scotland. This species is now recorded from Ireland and redescribed, and another species P. longicaudatasp. nov., collected in Galicia, is described.The genus Protostyelais characterized by a very simple branchial structure which corresponds to a young stage in the ascidian branchial development. The relationships of the genus with other ascidian genera with similar characteristics are discussed.
