Abstract
The article features the painted box with illustrative scenes and the illustration of romance in the early thirteenth century. The long side of the box shows a battle scene on one side and soldiers under an arcade on the other. The short sides features a group of four or five tents and geometric floral ornaments on the other. The lid of the box shows a two headed monster in combat with a man and on the other side showing two mounted knights with lance and shield in single combat. The box, shows a link to the history of French romance in the early thirteenth century, considering the scenes of romances are common on ivory caskets from the fourteenth and can occur on all household artifacts from the mid-thirteenth century.
