Abstract
An encyclopedia entry about African-American performing artists is presented. Dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey, founder of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, studied dancing after graduating from high school, where he was a star athlete. Comedian Eddie Anderson, born in Oakland, California, in 1906, became one of the best-known African-American entertainers. Singer and actress Pearly Bailey made her New York stage debut in 1946 in the musical "St. Louis Woman," where she won a Donaldson Award as the year's most promising new performer.
