Abstract
In classical palaeontology, the subdiscipline of palaeoichnology has reached a spectacular development. In archaeozoology, the analysis of trace fossils or ichnofossils focuses most often on marks left by animals and people on animal bone, but many other trace fossils exist. The present paper provides a definition and a practical classification of trace fossils produced by animals, derived from the one used by most palaeontologists and a provisional inventory of archaeozoological ichnofossils. The use of trace fossils for archaeological reconstruction outside the much publicized realm of hominid food procurement is illustrated. Archaeozoology and palaeontology would both benefit from a more exhaustive treatment of ichnofossils from archaeological contexts. Copyright 1993, 1999 Academic Press
