In this article the author comments on the poem "The Day Lady Died," by Frank O'Hara. Within the poem, trans., is just one moment of varied exchange. The word, trans., stands as a funny gesture, not satire, toward the theme of language exchanges. Attitudes toward the cold war, and toward translation as trans., in O'Hara, sketched in and not systematized in his work, stand for those breakthroughs the so-called New York School poets managed in general. They weren't the whole period, and exclusive attention to them of course would falsify it.
