Abstract
The birth of a baby and the transition to parenthood can create psychological challenges for all parents. It is suggested that, from a psychoanalytic perspective, a parent's ability to ease into their new role may be determined by the experiences of their own childhood and the imprint of the parenting that they have received. A parent who has experienced a nurturing and loving childhood may be more able to replicate this in their relationship with their own infant (Lieberman et al, 2005). However, for a parent who has experienced relationships of harm and fear in his or her early development the responsibility for the wellbeing of another can sometimes be overwhelming (Coates, 2012).
