Abstract
The effect of chemical shielding on the quantum adiabatic phase factor for a nuclear spin in a molecule is studied. The electronic state dependence of the shielding is shown to produce geometrical relative phase shifts among the eigenfunction components of a nonstationary electronic state. The results are illustrated for two simple systems, a prolate oscillator and asymptotically separated H2+.
