Abstract
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease involving bronchial hyperreactivity that classically presents with intermittent dyspnea, wheezing, and cough. Episodic dyspnea is associated with asthma, but an overlooked etiology is a hiatal hernia involving herniation of abdominal organs into the thorax. Respiratory manifestations of hiatal hernias are typically not considered and can result in a misdiagnosis of asthma with subsequent unnecessary treatment.
