Abstract
The article focuses on how humor and wit are conveyed in Islamic art. It stresses that the representation of humor and wit in Islamic art appears generally on painted surfaces specifically on ceramics and manuscript illustrations. The humor is epigraphic and pictorial and becomes more meaningful when associated with the popular literature of the age. It also adds that the artist's portrayal of humor and wit is a personal reaction to contemporaneous lifestyles and mores. Humor and wit in past civilizations cannot convey the delicate and esoteric nuances of linguistic and pictorial applications across centuries.
