Abstract
The article states that Barium Enema Examination is a definitive procedure for diagnosis and management of intussusception in infants and children. The most serious complication of the Barium Enema Examination in these children is perforation of the colon. The authors followed three such cases of colon perforation during hydrostatic reduction of intussusception that occurred from 1977 to 1982 at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. In each case perforations were multiple, within areas of necrosis. All perforations occurred in patients under 10 months of age and no leading point was seen. On review of the barium enemas performed for intussusception at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia during the past 5 years, the authors found three cases of colon perforation during hydrostatic reduction of an intussusception, without use of an inflated rectal balloon. The fluoroscopic procedure used is given in the article. After immobilization of the infant, residual stomach contents were removed via a nasogastric tube.
