Abstract
Section 1.1 of the monograph "Web Science: Understanding the Emergence of Macro-Level Features on the World Wide Web," by Kieron O'Hara and colleagues is presented. The emergence and control of online social networks are discussed. The concept of social machines in the context of web science is outlined. Several social networking sites are highlighted including Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.
