Abstract
The author ponders on the future of national health systems. The author observes the rising healthcare costs due to technological advances while elected officials propose the commercialization and privatization of health systems. The author refers to futility and fear as factors that inflate healthcare costs and urges the need to address the futile and expensive treatments at the end of life. The author sees the disappearance of normal variations of health from medicine, and points out the value of having well-trained generalist physicians and nurses.
