Abstract
The article discusses a debate on whether to demolish or preserve the civic building East German Palace of the Republic. It traces the history of the construction of the building and at the same time describes the areas inside the structure which were used for various cultural and political events. Also included are the issues involved in the proposal to restore Berlin's Royal Castle which was originally constructed in the site where the Palace of the Republic is situated.
