Abstract
The article focuses on the nature of social conflict theory and sport organization systems. Two principally different positions have been advanced pertaining to the coherence of social systems. The first is a consensus theory that posits that groups form and maintain themselves because of a high degree of consensus on pervasive patterns of values. Sport organizations are perceived to form as communities of individuals like-minded in their interest in a particular sport. A second theoretical position is built on the assumption that dissension and tension toward change are inherent in any social system. Fusion of systems through time is a function of social control mechanisms that regulate interaction among various position holders in the system. Social control mechanisms differ in the degree to which position holders share in regulatory control. International and national sport organizations are characterized by mechanisms which regulate interaction among members and with other organizations.
