Abstract
The article focuses on a study conducted to find out the process of physiognomic conversion from grassland and savanna to woodlands, prior to settlement of the Rio Grande Plains of Texas. Topics discussed include formation of gaps among clusters, development of woody plant community punctuated by precipitation variations, and role of mesquite in the conversion.
