Abstract
The article examines the trajectory of the Spanish colonial imaginary during the Great Depression of the 1930s and from 1989 to the present in the southwestern border city of El Paso, Texas. The Twelve Travelers project published the names of persons associated with the Spanish colonization of the southwest, including Alvar Nuñez, and Juan de Oñate. Carey McWilliams' concept of Spanish imaginary defined a mythic world inhabited by conquistadores and missionaries, an imagined past during which civilization was brought to a savage land.
