Abstract
It is only in the last few years that the technique of the public opinion poll has been applied for the study of opinions and attitudes of the people of West Africa. The first piece of work by authors was a market survey carried out in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. The aim was to study the market for a range of petroleum products, from two points of view, namely, consumption and distribution. At the planning stage there are problems connected with population sampling on the basis of the existing documentation and the problems connected with the drawing up of questionnaires adapted to African people. At the stage of execution, there are problems arising out of the special conditions affecting interviews in the field, and those concerned with the recruitment and training of teams of local investigators. The objectives of second survey, that concerned with the degree of penetration of three information media in urban populations, necessitated greater strictness in the selection of samples. From third survey, authors had to select representative samples of young people of both sexes, from both urban and rural districts, in five different countries. In Africa, field work, particularly in the form of interviews, is often carried out in rather special conditions. Demarcation of line between people of villages and towns should be evident.
