Abstract
The article reports that student Emily Gatch is working to detect and combat Fusarium wilt which threatens spinach plants in Skagit Valley, Washington. Gatch is conducting her research on the soil-dwelling microscopic fungus at the Washington State University Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Center. Once Fusarium has infected the soil, scientists reveal that spinach cannot be grown in that area for up to 15 years. It has also been blamed for the decline in seed production.
