Abstract
The article discusses a study which examined the impact of single housing on the welfare and cognition in rats. Stress levels in single housing and paired housing were compared by means of a cognitive test. Results showed that single-housed rats have higher levels of bar-biting than socially-housed rats. The study suggests further investigation on the welfare of laboratory rats that is affected by the visual contact allowed by different cages.
