Abstract
This article focuses on the book "Wartime Mission in Spain, 1942-45" by Carlton J.H. Hayes. Hayes tells us, with candid self-approval, that the newspaper comment on his appointment as ambassador to Spain was almost universally favorable and commendatory. Only the journal "The Nation," expressed dissatisfaction. But he explains, that this journal could hardly be satisfied by any action affecting Spain short of a declaration of war. With as much anger as sorrow Hayes admits there was a time indeed when the U.S. State Department unaccountably got tough, and despite his strenuous objections, appeals to former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, did cut out Spain's oil.
