Abstract
The article discusses methods used in postoperative pain management as a key element in the patient's enhanced recovery programme. It describes the pharmacology of both common and specialist analgesics and their comparative efficacy. It explains the role, uses, and safety of regional and neuraxial analgesia, for the non-anaesthetist. Topics include acute pain mechanisms, reasons for poor postoperative pain management, and most commonly used nerve blockade for specific types of surgeries.
