Abstract
The article discusses the historical background and various versions of the first French translation of Valerius Maximus' "Factorum et dictorum memorabilium" by Simon de Hesdin. The Latin-to-French translation was commissioned by King Charles V in the 14th century. The project was one of the numerous literary initiatives of the French king following the Hundred Year's War in an effort to learn from Roman history. An illustration of the introductory page of the French translation, the one kept by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is examined and compared with several versions kept by other museums.
