Abstract
Summary: A structure of the essences of the experience of belonging was developed from the texts of the interviews. The experience of belonging at work had many dimensions. Key elements of understanding were time, experience, and self. Constituents are the elements of which the phenomenon (as experienced) is composed. The constituents of belonging at work included: (a) being invited and learning to be a part of a work group; (b) connecting with colleagues and wanting to be included; (c) doing meaningful work and being recognized; (d) natural selection at work; competing and being excluded; (e) being needed and finding myself deeply involved in my profession; and (f) reflecting on time, work, and people passing.
