Abstract
Summary: In 2002, The Review of General Psychology printed a list of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the 20th century and the 25 psychologists most frequently quoted in psychology textbooks. Elizabeth Loftus, cognitive psychologist, was ranked 58th in the top 100, and 20 th in the top 25, respectively, and is the highest ranking female psychologist included. Yet in addition to this accolade and other notable accomplishments, Dr. Loftus also bears the distinction of receiving some of the most vitriolic criticism from both professional colleagues and members of popular society. This qualitative study, utilizing techniques from the study of individual lives, aims to explore why Dr. Loftus is vilified and what motivates her to continue her work despite harsh criticism.
