Abstract
Summary: The Reading Adler is also a rich source of sociolinguistic and structural linguistic data, including 467 Pennsylvania Dutch texts written by Dr. Frank R. Brunner (1835--1908) between 1875 and 1908. The second half of this dissertation focuses on structural aspects of these texts. First, it investigates the syntactic architecture of thematically bound clauses, often referred to as complex sentences (Pittner and Berman 2013) or syntactic gestalts (Auer 1996). The analysis centers on clause linkage phenomena, specifically patterns of embedding (hypotaxis) and adjacency (parataxis). This dissertation concludes with an analysis of Brunner's case system, with a specific focus on Brunner's use of den and der as accusative masculine singular case markers.
