Abstract
Summary: Study 2 provided empirical support for associations between alcohol-related problems and family support, collective efficacy, emotion regulation drinking motives, and limited access to emotion regulation strategies among ethnically diverse adolescents. Specifically, this study indicated emotion regulation drinking motives and limited access to emotion regulation strategies are strong predictors of the severity of alcohol-related problems among adolescents who experience problems, uniquely predicting number of different problems above level of alcohol use and geographic location. Study 2 supports directing more attention to emotion and emotion regulation in investigations of risk and protective factors for alcohol-related problems among adolescents of diverse ethnic and racial groups and examining if social factors interact with emotional factors in predicting the presence and severity of alcohol-related problems among these youth.
