Abstract
Summary: The kinetic data were best described by generalized Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Hougen-Watson rate expressions. The rate expression that best fits the data is based on a surface reaction involving ethylene adsorbed on one type of site and oxygen adsorbed on another type of site. No competition for adsorption sites between ethylene and oxygen is expected. On the other hand, water is believed to compete for adsorption on the same sites as ethylene. The rate depends on the 0.45 power of the light irradiance. The activation energy for the reaction is 13.04 kJ/mol and the standard enthalpy of adsorption for ethylene is −14.15 kJ/mol.
