Abstract
The overvaluing of property is not restricted to houses, as a very peeved Cheshire Building Society will testify. In spring 2005, it advanced loans of £11.5 million to the owner of an old factory in Birmingham that was worth no more than £2 million. Nobody is keen to give the brass back, so the Cheshire is suing the property firm whose employee said the place was worth up to £16 million. The High Court last month ordered Dunlop Haywards, now owned by Erinaceous, to pay the building society £10 million after the judge said head of valuation Ian McGarry's view of the building's worth was "only consistent with dishonesty".
