Abstract
Recreational mathematics is fun mathematics. It includes games, riddles, puzzles and magic squares. The purpose of this paper is to present an optimization model approach to one of Gardner's puzzles, "A Digit-Placing Problem," which appears in chapter seven (Eight Problems) in the book The Unexpected Hanging and Other Mathematical Diversions (Gardner, 1969, 1991). The approach is to use a fun mathematical approach to learning for students engaged in a quantitative university classroom setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
