Abstract
This article explores the role of philanthropy in supporting movements for racial and economic justice and countering right-wing authoritarianism. The authors, who are leaders of movement foundations, argue for more funders who align with these movements and take direction from them. They emphasize the need for philanthropy to change its practices and align its grantmaking and investments with movement-identified strategies. The article also discusses the current political crisis characterized by the rise of a white supremacist, authoritarian far-right movement and the importance of grassroots organizations in defending multiracial working-class communities and preserving democracy. The authors highlight the importance of building political power through organizing, strategic alliances, and long-term strategies. They also suggest ways for progressive funders to be more effective, such as building trusting relationships and collaborating with other funders. The authors call for philanthropy to move beyond performative actions and embrace discomfort, curiosity, and risk in order to achieve real transformation. [Extracted from the article]
